Slumdog Millionaire in Oscar: Moment of Proud or Shame
Posted by vivekraut24x7 on January 23, 2009
Slumdog Millionaire has won 4 prestigious Golden Globe awards and has been nominated in 10 categories for Oscar. Facts suggest that the movie is extraordinary and thus the makers should be acclaimed and showered with accolades. Every Indian will see the event as a moment of proud. But there is another side to it and is flipped by many indians including Amitabh Bachchan. Let me put it this way. Slumdog Millionaire is a certificate that says:
To Whomsoever It May Concern
1. We are willing to show the darker side if and only if we get fame, money and applause.
2. We are not concerned about the lack of apathy shown to the poor. We have no time to think about what is right or wrong.
3. The slumdwellers should have ethics and moral responsibilities. If not, we will provide them oppurtunities to build illegal slums, electricity and water for daily livings. They are a good votebank.
4. We are not bothered even if our airports and other important places are exposed to danger because of this.
5. Riots are just a part of life. Let us fight each other and see who gains domination.
6. Indian filmmakers should not expect any prestigious awards no matter what subject they base their stories on. Good music is not enough for winning an award. Music for a film directed by an englishman can make some sense.
7. Life is full of filth in India. Dirty words, imbalanced system and immoral behavior are not surprising.
Now check this:
Swiss Banking Association report, 2006 details bank deposits in the territory of Switzerland by nationals of following countries:
TOP FIVE
|
INDIA |
$1,456 BILLION |
|
RUSSIA |
$470 BILLION |
|
U.K. |
$390 BILLION |
|
UKRAINE |
$100 BILLION |
|
CHINA |
$96 BILLION |
Now do the math’s – India with $1,456 billion or $1.4 trillion has more money in Swiss banks than rest of the world combined.
Probably this will not make a good subject for a film.

guys..y do v always hide behind these facades….u n i know that whatever was shown in the movie happens in india…none of us who spent their life in india are oblivious of the facts…then y r v so hypocrites.. on one hand v want the cinema to be original and truthful, we want them to tell the truth, we hate when the censor black friday, we hate when they ban fire or don’t let the shooting of water on indian soil, or most recently these manglore attacks by so called ram sena..in the end its just that we know there is a part of india which is worse than gutter but we just dont want world to know it exist..its the same foreign directors who made GANDHI, the movie, which bagged 8 oscars.. then we praised we had a leader like gandhi..now that a movie showing slums of india is ready to win oscars, we don’t hold responsibility of slums, but we slam the director for a biased opinion….we are slowly beoming the same politicians whom we hate…we acknowledge or rather forcibly grab anything gud someone says about india and reject each and everything which points to our faults and faiures….i would say hail Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tondon who gave this insight and shame on us indians and indian politicians who even after seeing that hell for 50 yrs are in a denial that it doesn’t exist…after all we love SHINING INDIA and not the WHINING INDIANS…

And by the way in response to your statistics about swiss banks…i feel its a stupid comparison..swiss banks are known for their right to deny any government access to their accounts or even the names of their account holders…it means that its the best possible place to keep one’s “black money”. And as far as i know swiss banks don’t give any interest..infact they take maney to keep your stuff in their lockers..so if indians have more than a trillion dollars to keep in swiss banks and pay for it to be there, then why don’t they keep it in SBI which gives 8.5% annual interest rate…the only reason i can think of is that its “black money” which they gathered by duping indian people and indian govt and can’t keep in indian banks..so its nothing to boast that we have more than a trillion dollars in swiss banks..its a shame that in a country whee 70% of population lives below a dollar per day earning, we have a trillion dollars of illegal money stuffed in foreign banks..and last but not the least..entire BOFORS scandal money and the commission was in swiss bank..and we still haven’t been able to get the details of account holders…do you need any more proof?????? I love india but hate hypocrites who deny its actual state!!!!! JAI HIND…

Very true Harpreet.
The movie, like Gandhi, came into limelight because it involved foreign film makers. The film may have grossed lot of money outside but it is struggling in India.
When Amitabh commented on the movie, it was not even released in India.. even the DVDs/VCDs are expected in April.
A R Rahman has composed brilliant music in the past. Though “Jai Ho” has good music but its not the best from Rahman.
Things are not that simple

I’m sorry to write so much..but one more thing..Im writing how swiss bank secrecy works..its on their site:
“Swiss bankers are under obligation to keep any information about you or your account strictly confidential.
This bank secrecy is among the strictest in the world and stems from an age-old historical tradition. It is established in Swiss law. Any banker who reveals information about you without your consent risks several months in prison.
The only exceptions to this rule concern serious crimes such as gun smuggling and drug trafficking.
Bank secrecy is not lifted for tax evasion. This is because failure to report income or assets is not considered a crime in Switzerland. As such, neither the Swiss government, nor anyother government, can obtain information about your bank account. They must first convince a Swiss judge that you have committed a serious crime punishable by the Swiss Penal Code.”
So i don’t want to comment on that matter further.. but yesssssss!!!!! about your 7 points..i think they are absolutely correct..not in a sarcastic way..but they are true facts..Riots, filth, airport security, illegal slums, apathy for poor etc are topics which we just dont wanna discuss as if we do, they’ll go on forever…i can and want to elucidate on those points but cant due to time restrictions..
Anyways i like the 6th point about music which might be taken in an ironic sense as A.R.Rahman has given better music that this and its not the ultimate music compilation he has which went to oscars..other than that, rest is just plain truth..just be impartial and ask yourselves!!!!!

Recently, due to international pressure, the Swiss government agreed to disclose the names of the account holders only if the respective governments formally asked for it Indian government is not asking for the details….. …no marks for guessing why?
